I am not going back to uni after finishing my bachelor.

I started off uni wanting to teach and applied for an art history bachelor course. Now, signing up for an art history bachelor I expected 3 years of art history lectures. What I got however was 1,5 years of art history lectures before I had to start choosing lectures on other subjects. I wasn’t exactly happy about it, but it was all right. I was sort of hoping I’d get to choose more art history lectures further into the bachelor. I didn’t.

I ended up choosing various history lectures, figuring history and art history sort of go hand in hand. It was fun for a while, but history wasn’t exactly what I wanted to study in the first place and as the semesters went by my options became more and more limited. In the end the lectures I had to choose from had nothing to do with art history at all. I mean, I’ll soon be taking my exam in medicine. Medicine? In an art history bachelor course. The other subjects I had to choose from were geography and mathematics.

Now that I am ending my bachelor I no longer want to teach. I don’t feel like I got to study what I actually wanted to study. I feel done with uni. Right now there is nothing I want to study. My growing disappointment with the lectures I’ve had to choose from show on my grades. When I actually had art history lectures, my grades were fine, but now, after 1,5 years of lectures I have no interest in well.., looking over my grades makes me feel like a failure. This isn’t something I want to go back to. I can do better, just give me something I care about.

So instead of going back to uni after finishing my bachelor I am going to spend my time working and figuring out what I want to study and do with my life. It’s new, it’s different, it’s something I need right now. Until I get a job my job will be getting a job. I think it’ll be good for me. If I go back to uni now it’ll just be more lectures I don’t really want, bad grades and worse self esteem.

..Now I just need to tell mum and dad. I have a feeling they won’t be optimistic about it.

This is Japan in a nutshell. Forget all the crazy stuff with the weird tv programs and the cosplaying—that’s just the outer shell that gets attention because it’s unusual. This, this is the beauty of the country. I’ve had little grandmothers chase me down because I dropped my shinkansen tickets. In amusement parks, the attendants do their upmost to get lost items (usually cardigans or kids’ shoes) back to the owners—before the owners even realize they’d lost said item(s). I’ve had complete strangers not only give my thorough directions but have offered to drive me to the place I needed to go.

It is so, so, so hard to go back to the States after you get the J-treatment. I mean, Japan has its downside (“What is this madness you call pizza???”), but the general attitudes of everyone—even the so-called hardcore yankees (two of whom who, on a blazing summer day, helped me find one of my schools when I was heinously lost in the labyrinth that is the neighborhood in which said school is located)—is the epitome of the mindset that I wish everyone would adopt. Because yelling at people gets you nowhere. And being able to empathize with people kinda helps make this country a really nice place to live in.
